Bison Restoration

"When the white man wanted to build railroads, when they wanted to farm or raise cattle, the buffalo protected us. They tore up the railroad tracks and gardens. They chased the cattle off the ranges. The buffalo loved their people as much as the people loved them." -Old Lady Horse

Did you know that prior to colonization there were 30-60 million free roaming bison on the plains? The US slaughtered so many bison that by the end of the 1700's there were roughly 450 bison left in the country. Currently there are only 15,000 free roaming bison in the US.

Bison hold a deep cultural and spiritual significance for many Indigenous peoples, representing not only a sacred connection to our heritage, but also a source of nourishment and sustenance. Bison is not only a cornerstone of Native diets, but also plays a deeply symbolic role in reconnecting our people to their cultural roots and traditions.

If you would like to support us in making our vision to reconnect Native communities to their ancestral food ways, please reach out to us or via our Contact page.
